Utah Jazz NBA Season Preview: Rudy Gobert | Donovan Mitchell | Mike Conley [2019-20]

The Utah Jazz entered the 2018-19 season riding a wave of positive momentum. On the heels of Donovan Mitchell turning heads and establishing himself as a worthy sidekick to Rudy Gobert. Mitchell and the Jazz surprised a lot of people with a 48-win campaign and a 6-game series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. But the team started off slow last season and it took them a couple of months for them to resemble the team from the previous year. Ultimately the lost in the first round to the Houston Rockets. The Jazz front office decided to make some big time moves this past offseason and you could say they have the best offseason on any team in the league. They added Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, Jeff Green and Ed Davis. The Jazz are locked and loaded this year and could be serious contenders for the championship.

With Rudy Gobert sitting, the Utah Jazz defense continued to play well even as the team plays with a more uptempo pace.

Ricky Rubio shined with a scorching 8/10 shooting night from the field. And Donovan Mitchell is making a case he might already be better than Devin Booker.

Joe Ingles has been incredible for the Utah Jazz hitting threes at an incredible percentage and playing solid defense against opposing small forwards.

The Utah Jazz defense has been incredible to start the year. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder they held Russell Westbrook to six points in the victory. The Jazz defense swarmed the Thunder and they were visibly frustrated getting three technical fouls in the game. The Jazz will earn the NBA a lot of technical money this season.

Derrick Favors has been guarding the perimeter very nicely and did a good job on Carmelo Anthony tonight. It can’t be stated enough how nice it is to have a healthy Derrick Favors.

Rudy Gobert returned to his dominant self putting in 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Epic Epke Udoh did it again, playing incredible defense behind Rudy Gobert and ending the game a plus/minus of +11. The Jazz are going to win a lot of games this year because of their second unit defense.

The Utah Jazz played the Los Angeles Clippers hoping to keep their momentum after an impressive win against the Oklahoma City Thunder but fell short. For three quarters the team struggled to hit shots, especially Donovan Mitchell, who’s shot has inexplicably not fallen to start the year.

Blake Griffin looked like a legitimate MVP candidate while Patrick Beverly and Austin Rivers were lights out. All of this added up to a frustrating loss for the Jazz.

The silver lining was in the fourth quarter where Donovan Mitchell seemed to break through his slump. At one point, Mitchell hit three three pointers in a row and the Clippers lead was cut to 7 until the Clippers ended the run.

The Utah Jazz started off hot after moving Donovan Mitchell to the starting lineup. Rodney Hood looked good coming off the bench and went to the line multiple times which was a welcome sign. The turning point in the game was Utah’s abysmal third quarter where they scored only 8 points.

But credit must also be given to the Miami Heat who got big shots from Dion Waiters and Goran Dragic who led the heat to a big win in Utah.

The Utah Jazz ran out of gas late against the Oklahoma City Thunder and lose a close one to end their 6-game winning streak.

Donovan Mitchell continues to be a star for the Jazz leading them with 31 points in the near win.

Russell Westbrook was huge for the Thunder with another triple double of 34p/13r/14a.

All of a sudden Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell are starting to gel for the Utah Jazz. Both had stretches during their game with the Toronto Raptors where they were dominant. Mitchell with his offensive flourishes and Gobert bullying players down low.

Ricky Rubio was phenomenal tonight setting up players, getting rebounds and hitting shots, including the game winner.

Derrick Favors played great and showed incredible heart. Whatever happens up until trade deadline, Derrick Favors has been an incredible part of this team and city. Thank you, Derrick.

The Utah Jazz put on a clinic against the Golden State Warriors. Ricky Rubio was incredible scoring 23 points and dishing 11 assists. Even more remarkable might have been his defense against Stephen Curry who only scored 14 points.

Joe Ingles is absolutely out of his slump and hitting threes with prolificity! (hows that for word choice)

Finally, Donovan Mitchell was incredible again on his way to a rookie of the year season with 20 points, 4 assists and 4 steals.

All of a sudden that’s 3 in the row for the Jazz who are now 3.5 games out of the playoffs.

Another incredible Ricky Rubio performance powered the Utah Jazz over the San Antonio Spurs. Scoring a career high 34 points with 9 assists, Rubio was brilliant and has helped lead the Jazz to 5 wins in a row!

Royce O’neale was fantastic with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. O’neale has been a revelation this season and seems to be getting better every game. Expect more and more minutes from the rookie guard from Baylor.

Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors commanded the paint once again. With the Jazz playing this well on both ends of the court, the playoffs are a very real possibility.
