Utah Jazz NBA Season Preview: Rudy Gobert | Donovan Mitchell | Mike Conley [2019-20]
The Utah Jazz entered the 2018-19 season riding a wave of positive momentum. On the heels of Donovan Mitchell turning heads and establishing himself as a worthy sidekick to Rudy Gobert. Mitchell and the Jazz surprised a lot of people with a 48-win campaign and a 6-game series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. But the team started off slow last season and it took them a couple of months for them to resemble the team from the previous year. Ultimately the lost in the first round to the Houston Rockets. The Jazz front office decided to make some big time moves this past offseason and you could say they have the best offseason on any team in the league. They added Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, Jeff Green and Ed Davis. The Jazz are locked and loaded this year and could be serious contenders for the championship.

Did the Hawks use too much draft capital to acquire their 2019 draft picks? Why Cam Reddish might be the swing prospect in the Hawks rebuild. The Jazz added more offensive playmakers, how might that impact their defensive performance? Why Quin Snyder is the perfect coach to help Donovan Mitchell through his expected role adjustment.
With the FIBA World Cup wrapped up, the latest J-Notes Blast Podcast episode looks at the performance of each Utah Jazz player and how it will translate to the 2019-20 NBA season!
We’ve officially reached the calm before the storm as we await the start of Utah Jazz training camp and the beginning of the 2019-20 NBA season. With the FIBA World Cup all wrapped up, there’s certainly a general stillness surrounding the Association, but it’s certain to not last for long as the excitement is looming just on the horizon.
With very few new topics to cover, this latest episode of The J-Notes Blast Podcast will simply take a deeper dive into the recent FIBA play of the three Utah Jazz players that participated – Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and Joe Ingles. Each of them had solid outings, and though the results were mixed, each enjoyed prolific success in their own way.
As well as look at how each player fared in FIBA play, I also take a look at how that could translate over when they suit back up for the Utah Jazz, which is what truly will be most important to both them and their fans.
For Point 1, we’ll focus exclusively on Donovan Mitchell and Team USA, including what Mitchell did well but what Team USA’s overall shortcomings truly were.
For Point 2, we’ll talk about Rudy Gobert’s play with France, with a dash of opinion on former Jazzman Ricky Rubio and his play with Spain as the FIBA World Cup MVP.
Lastly, for Point 3, we’ll hit on Joe Ingles’ play with Australia as well as how he’ll ultimately fit in with the Utah Jazz roster this upcoming season.

The NBA has changed a lot this past summer, and so have the Utah Jazz. It’s now time to predict how things will unfold during the regular season in a new-look league.
The dog days of summer come every year around August and September for basketball fans. Once the dust settles after free agents signing in July, and once summer league ball is over, all we can do is sit tight until training camp starts. Fortunately this year, we’ve had the FIBA World Cup to hold us over, and watching three Jazzmen participate for their respective countries has been a delight.
Joe Ingles has been rock solid for the Australian team, and hasn’t missed a beat this summer. He has his fingerprints all over the game with points, rebounds and assists. Meanwhile Rudy Gobert has had a great FIBA showing, leading France to a historic win over Team USA, and a bronze medal.
Donovan Mitchell struggled at time in FIBA action, having several games and exhibitions where his shot just wouldn’t fall. He also had some good games, though, like his 29-point performance in the quarterfinals against France, his seven-assist performance against Brazil, and his 16-point,10-assist performance in the last game.
Overall, I would say this has been a great opportunity for him to critique his individual game with great basketball minds like Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr.
Mitchell had by far his best game of FIBA play, just the kind of game Jazz fans have been waiting for, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get past Rudy Gobert and France. Mitchell went off for 29 points on 12-of-23 shooting. pic.twitter.com/xhP2b3BctC

Mitchell looks ready to add more dimensions to his game like improved defense, better playmaking and cutting down his turnovers. Considering he’s already a 20-plus point per game scorer, Spida looks ready to impress in year three.
At any rate, with the World Cup on the books, we turn our attention to the upcoming campaign and a league that looks dramatically different after all the player movement this summer. How will things shake out in a new-look league?
I’ve already given my prediction for the Jazz’s start of the season, going 28-13. Here are my win-loss predictions for every team in the league.
